When you use your debit card to pay for a service and add a tip, such as after a haircut or restaurant meal, the amount of the payment will increase later when the tip processes.
Store merchants have a variety of policies for how quickly they process refunds on items you return. Monitor your account to see when the credit processes before you count on that money being available.
Some gas stations take $1 from your account to verify your debit card, and then place a hold per their standard amount, such as $75. It may take a few days to refund you the difference between the hold and your actual gas purchase.
