Money transfer apps

Use payment apps to pay friends—fast.

Getting started with your bank
March 04, 2020

We can all agree that it’s the worst when you want to pay someone back but don’t have cash on you. The good news is, you can set up your TCF® Debit Card with a money transfer app, such as Zelle®, and pay back your bestie—no cash needed.

Here’s how to get started.

  • Decide which money transfer app you want to use. Please research your options thoroughly. Some apps have usage fees while others have advertisements. Some apps pay within minutes, while others take days—so be sure to carefully review all of the details.
  • Download the app to your phone and enroll, using your TCF Debit Card as the funding source.
  • Depending on the app, you typically need a person’s phone number or email address to pay them. We recommend you ONLY pay people you know personally—not strangers.
  • Take note of the payments you make. When you look at your account’s available balance, you need to keep in mind (and deduct from your balance) the payments that haven’t yet processed so you don’t overspend.

If the person you’re paying needs a check, you can use digital banking from your computer, mobile device or our mobile banking app to pay them. Log in to digital banking and select the pay & transfer tool. Go to manage recipients, add person, and fill in the recipient’s information. We’ll send them a check by mail at no charge. Please note that it may take four days for the check to arrive.
