Documents to bring to account opening

When you go to a branch to open your small business account, there are certain documents you need.

  • Social Security numbers of the beneficial owner(s), defined as someone with enough control or ownership of the funds to allow him or her to make decisions about the account.
  • EIN of the business (if applicable)
  • Social Security number of the person or people who manage the business, such as a chief financial officer or treasurer
  • ID and personal information (name, address and date of birth) for anyone else who will access the account

You’ll also need business organization documents (which may vary by state or county) as determined by the type of business you own. Here are some examples of business types and documentation:

  • Sole proprietorship: Assumed name certificate (doing business as)
  • Partnership: Partnership agreement listing the name of the partnership and general partners
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC): Articles of organization or LLC membership agreement
  • Corporation: Articles of incorporation
  • Corporation not for profit: Articles of incorporation plus a charter or other document that lists officers
